Circle 3

Cerberus

In ancient mythology, he was a three headed dog, son of Typhon, that guarded the gates of the underworld. In The Inferno, he guards the third circle of Hell and punishes gluttons by feasting on them. He himself could be identified as one, but he is not a mortal with a choice. Instead, he is naturally inclined to eat when food is given.

Ciacco

Literally meaning "pig" in Italian, Ciacco lacks identity. He knew Dante in Florence. He therefore has knowledge of the Florentine Politics, and has a prophecy for Dante that although the white (guelphs) will control the power during early debates, in three years' time the black (guelphs) will begin to control the white for many years.

Last Judgement

In Catholicism, the Last Judgement is a time where Jesus Christ will resurrect and every soul will unite with its body. Those who are dead will retain their punishments or rewards, and only the living will receive the new judgment. The primary difference is that the feelings and reactions to the punishments or rewards will be corporeal, not just for the souls. Pain will be felt by bodies.

Florentine Politics 1300-1302

The white and black guelphs, which where opposing factions that supported the Pope, battled for control. Dante was part of the white guelphs, which were in power at the time. In 1300, leaders of both parties were punished through exile, but most of the white guelphs ignored their exile and returned. In 1302, however, Pope Boniface VIII gave French Prince Charles of Valois permission to throw out six hundred leading white guelphs. Dante was on of the six hundred.

Gluttons

Revelers who were never productive and only turned food into waste. In the third circle, they are surrounded by waste and slowly become waste themselves as Cerberus, the immortal glutton, feeds on them.
